Here’s a story about Mr. Liu from Shenyang, China. Shenyang is one of the largest cities in Northeast China. In 1994, Mr. Liu experienced terrible pain in his neck. The pain came out of nowhere. It lasted for days. The pain was too much for him, so he went to the doctor. The doctor told him that the pain came from a tumor on his spinal cord. The search for treatments began. He went to several big hospitals in Shenyang. The illness was confirmed, and it was said to be hard to treat as the tumor was in his neck. Any area of the spine, from neck to lower back, if any harm were to happen during surgery, the situation would be very dangerous.
Mr. Liu had a friend who practiced Buddhism and chanted frequently. One day, he paid Mr. Liu a visit. During their conversation, the friend asked, “Why don’t you try chanting?” Then he taught Mr. Liu how to chant. With his friend’s help, Liu got a statue of Guanyin Bodhisattva and began worshiping it. He began chanting daily. I am not sure how many times he chanted each day; maybe thousands, or hundreds of thousands. After chanting for 4 or 5 days, he began to settle down emotionally. He became calmer. The pain in his neck eventually decreased. Small improvements increased his confidence in the Buddha and bodhisattvas.
With his friend’s help, he even got himself a few sutras. He would chant and read sutras when he had time. At that time, the illness was still developing. His condition got worse. He chanted a lot. But to be honest, when your condition is dire and you are close to death, chanting for a bit can only help reduce the pain. But this was not enough for Mr. Liu, so he went to the doctor again. Based on their experience, 2 doctors told him that he would only live for another 2-3 months. He was at a critical stage.
After he heard what the doctors said, he went home devastated. I believe that he was very emotional, conflicted and in pain right then. So, he knelt before the Guanyin Bodhisattva statue and pleaded, “Dear Bodhisattva, if my life must come to an end, then please take me to the Western Pure Land. If I can still live, please send me a doctor for my surgery so I can recover faster. If I recover from this illness, I will practice every day, chant and help other people. I will also never kill, inflict pain or do immoral things. I will spread the teachings of Buddhism.” Those were his promises to Guanyin Bodhisattva; he made those promises as a desperate man.
The next day, Mr. Liu had a dream. In his dream, a soft voice told him that he was going to be fine. He felt that it was the voice of Guanyin Bodhisattva. A week later, his old friend from Beijing called him up. He introduced Mr. Liu to a specialist from Beijing, who was skilled in operating on patients like Liu. So, he got the specialist’s contact number. But his friend also told him that the specialist had many patients. Mr. Liu had to count on his luck.
Apparently, this specialist never picked up calls. He had too many patients and it would be too many calls to answer. People who are sick are desperate, but not the specialist. Hundreds of people were lined up to get treated; he was very busy. That is why he had no time for calls. Liu was lucky. He tried calling the specialist the next day after praying to Guanyin Bodhisattva. Surprisingly, his call was answered. The specialist actually picked up his call.
Mr. Liu then quickly described his condition. Strangely, the call went smoothly and the specialist agreed to treat Mr. Liu. A few days later, Mr. Liu flew to Beijing for his operation. The operation lasted for 2 hours. Everything was smooth; there were no complications. However, a similar operation happened 2 months ago. The patient’s condition was similar to that of Mr. Liu. He was also treated by this specialist. Unfortunately, the patient died 2-3 months after his operation.
Like I mentioned, spine surgeries are very dangerous. But Mr. Liu continued to live a good life. 10 years after his operation, he is still healthy and fit. He went places to share his story and lead sessions of chanting the holy name of Guanyin Bodhisattva. His story brought hope to many patients, even those with cancer.
