By understanding the true meaning of making offerings and cultivating the proper mindset, you can receive the extraordinary merits and blessings of this practice.
Why Make Offerings to the Buddha? The Merits and Benefits
The Buddha embodies boundless compassion and wisdom. After many years of meditation and spiritual cultivation, the Buddha selflessly shared the truths of life and the universe with all beings, helping countless people free themselves from suffering. Making offerings to the Buddha is an expression of respect and gratitude toward the Buddha, and it is also an important aspect of Buddhist practice. Below are three major benefits of making offerings to the Buddha.
Benefit 1: Receive the Buddha's Protection and Be Free From Misfortune
Making offerings to the Buddha creates a karmic connection with all buddhas and brings one into harmony with their compassionate energy. Through the blessings and protection of the buddhas, practitioners may overcome difficulties, avert disasters, transform misfortune into good fortune, and enjoy peace, harmony, and auspiciousness within the home.
Benefit 2: Receive the Buddha's Blessings and Fulfill Your Aspirations
Life is filled with challenges beyond human control. When faced with circumstances that cannot be changed through their own efforts, people often feel helpless. However, by sincerely making offerings to the Buddha and praying for the blessings and assistance of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, obstacles can be removed more easily, difficulties overcome, and heartfelt wishes fulfilled.
Benefit 3: Accumulate Merit and Blessings for a Fortunate Life
In The Earth Store Sutra, the Buddha teaches that those who make offerings to buddha and bodhisattva images receive immeasurable blessings and enjoy wonderful happiness in both the Heavenly and human realms. When these merits are dedicated to all sentient beings throughout the Dharma Realm, the resulting blessings become beyond measure. The value of an offering does not depend on its material worth. As long as it is offered with sincerity, immeasurable merit and wholesome karma will naturally be accumulated, bringing peace, good fortune, and success throughout one's life.
How Should You Make Offerings to the Buddha?
So, what is the proper way to make offerings? Grandmaster JinBodhi teaches that the essence of making offerings lies in maintaining a heart of sincerity and reverence. Provided your offering is made with genuine respect, whether you offer lights, flowers, fruit, delicious food, precious treasures, or other offerings, you can receive immeasurable merit and blessings. Below are three of the most common forms of offerings, along with important guidelines for each.
1. Offering Lights Before the Buddha: Benefits and Best Times
Offering a light before the Buddha allows us to receive the compassionate light of the Buddha and dedicate blessings to ourselves or others. May those receiving the offering be illuminated by the Buddha's light, protected by the Buddha's compassion, and blessed with peace, good fortune, and happiness.
Generally speaking, there is no restriction on when you may offer a light before the Buddha. Whenever there is a sincere wish or need, you may make a light-offering. However, offering lights during the birthdays of buddhas and bodhisattvas or during major Buddhist festivals is considered especially auspicious and may generate even greater blessings. When offering a light, you may sincerely pray for the fulfillment of your wishes. Alternatively, you may simply make the offering without asking for anything in return. You may make offerings without personal gain, which often generates even greater merit and blessings.
The merits of offering lights are mentioned in many Buddhist scriptures, including The Avataṃsaka Sutra and The Medicine Buddha Sutra. Offering lights before the Buddha is said to eliminate negative karma accumulated over countless lifetimes and dispel all darkness. Grandmaster JinBodhi also summarizes many of the benefits of offering lights, including: A dignified and radiant appearance Greater wisdom and insight Good health and longevity Success in life and career Protection from natural disasters and unexpected calamities
2. Offering Flowers to the Buddha: Meaning and Merits
Offering flowers to the Buddha represents "cause." Cultivating good causes naturally brings good rewards. Their beauty, purity, and fragrance symbolize the sincerity and reverence of the offeror; therefore, offering flowers is one of the most common offerings.
When offering flowers, it is best to choose varieties with little to no pollen, such as lotus flowers or orchids, to ensure they do not cause allergies or discomfort. Additionally, choosing fresh and clean flowers reflects the offeror's sincere heart.
By offering flowers, one is blessed with a dignified and beautiful appearance, wisdom, excellent personal connections, good fortune, and renown. Furthermore, offerors will easily encounter noble mentors to guide and help them, while gaining wealth and spiritual enlightenment. Offering flowers not only brings joy to the Buddha but also blankets all sentient beings in auspicious blessings.
3. Offering Fruit to the Buddha: Symbolism and Guidelines

Offering fruit to the Buddha represents sowing good seeds to reap good fruits. In Buddhism, nothing escapes the law of cause and effect. Offering fruit serves as a gentle reminder to remain diligent in our spiritual practice so that we may attain the ultimate, perfect fruit of full enlightenment.
When making a fruit offering, it is best to choose beautiful, fresh, and pleasantly fragrant fruits. Pungent varieties, such as durian, are not suitable for the altar. The number of fruit varieties or platters offered should be an even number, while the quantity of fruit on each individual platter should be an odd number. For example, if you offer two types of fruit—such as oranges and apples—each platter should contain an odd number of items, such as three, five, or seven. All fruit must be thoroughly washed before being placed on the altar. Additionally, the offerings should be replaced promptly to prevent them from drying out or spoiling on the altar table. Once removed from the altar, the offered fruit can be eaten by oneself or shared with family members.
According to the sacred sutras, offering food and drink before the Buddha brings immeasurable merit, yielding blessings such as longevity and good health, a dignified appearance, eloquent and unhindered speech, the deep respect and support of others, and immense good fortune.
More Ways to Make Offerings to the Buddha: Three Additional Ways to Receive Boundless Merit and Blessings
Besides offering lights, flowers, and fruit, what other ways are there to make offerings to the Buddha? In the Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's Practices and Vows Chapter (The Avataṃsaka Sutra), Samantabhadra Bodhisattva teaches that among all forms of offering, offering the dharma is the most supreme. Samantabhadra Bodhisattva said: "Among all offerings, the offering of the dharma is supreme... When bodhisattvas practice dharma offerings, they truly accomplish making offerings to the Thus Come One. Such practice is the highest form of offering." This means that sincerely practicing the Buddha's teachings, sharing the dharma to benefit all sentient beings, and cultivating compassion through one's actions constitute the finest offerings of all. Below are three examples of dharma offerings.
1. Sponsoring the Creation of a Buddha Statue
The Buddha statue symbolizes the perfect fulfillment of blessings and wisdom. Creating or sponsoring a dignified Buddha statue inspires reverence for the Buddha, enables people to experience the profound dignity of the Buddhadharma, and reminds practitioners to constantly remember and follow the Buddha's teachings. It also encourages us to cultivate the Buddha's compassion and gradually free ourselves from afflictions. The Earth Store Sutra records that those who sincerely sponsor the creation of an Earth Store Bodhisattva statue accumulate immense merit and receive boundless benefits. Because of this merit, they may be reborn in the Heavenly realms for 100 lifetimes and never fall into the lower realms. In addition, they receive the blessings and protection of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, bringing auspiciousness, family harmony, career success, and fulfillment in life.
2. Sponsoring the Printing of Buddhist Scriptures
Helping print Buddhist scriptures and spreading the Buddha's teachings is one of the highest forms of offering. The Buddhist scriptures preserve the profound wisdom and extraordinary teachings of Sakyamuni Buddha. By sponsoring the printing and distribution of these scriptures, we help transmit the wisdom of the dharma to more people, enabling them to develop wisdom, overcome fear, free themselves from suffering, attain peace of mind, and ultimately realize liberation. Those who sponsor the printing of Buddhist scriptures simultaneously fulfill three kinds of offerings: Material offering Dharma offering The offering of fearlessness
The Earth Store Sutra also states: "If good men or good women encounter Mahayana sutras, or even hear a single verse or sentence, and with sincere respect praise them, revere them, and make offerings, they will receive immeasurable and boundless rewards. If these merits are dedicated to the entire Dharma Realm, the resulting blessings are beyond comparison."
3. Supporting Buddhist Activities
Buddhist temples and meditation centers are places that help people free themselves from suffering and attain happiness. The establishment of a dharma center means that countless sentient beings can benefit from it in the future. In The Earth Store Sutra, the Buddha teaches that those who sincerely support or help build temples and encourage others to do the same may be reborn as kings for 30 successive lifetimes.
Therefore, supporting Buddhist causes—such as donating land, building temples or meditation centers, sponsoring Buddhist colleges or meditation centers, making offerings of Buddha statues or thangkas, supporting the circulation of Buddhist publications and dharma products, or volunteering for Buddhist organizations by assisting with daily operations, spreading the dharma, and supporting dharma events—not only cultivates compassion and the spirit of selfless service, but also enables one to accumulate immeasurable merit and blessings for oneself and future generations.
Bodhi Meditation | Testimonials on Making Offerings to the Buddha
Sponsoring Medicine Buddha Statues for My Children Brought Great Success to Their Careers | Wu Guohua | San Francisco, USA
Several years ago, I sponsored the creation of Medicine Buddha statues at the Bodhi Meditation Center on behalf of my son's family and my daughter's family. After that, the careers in both families became exceptionally successful. The following year, my daughter-in-law found an even better job that she was much happier with, and she was promoted shortly afterward. My son-in-law also moved from a small investment firm to a large company, where he received a higher salary and better benefits than before. He was promoted to department manager, and during the pandemic he even received both a year-end performance bonus and a salary increase.
This year, my son's company launched a new sales and exhibition project, and he asked me to help him find clients. Beginning in April, I chanted the Buddha's name for him every day during the group practice sessions at the meditation center, praying for the buddhas and bodhisattvas to bless and assist him. After that, I also made an offering to the Four-Armed Guanyin on behalf of our entire family. Two months later, my son told me that he already had more than enough clients. When he learned that I had been chanting the Buddha's name every day to pray for the success of his business, my son, who is not a Buddhist, smiled and said to me, "Mom, could you stop asking the buddhas and bodhisattvas to help me for now? I have a constant stream of clients—I’m simply too busy!" I am deeply grateful for the protection and blessings of the buddhas and bodhisattvas given to my entire family, which have allowed my children's careers to be so smooth and successful.
Sponsoring Padmasambhava's Heart Mantra Completely Eliminated My Father's Tailbone Pain | Fu Xiaoping | Toronto, Canada
Grandmaster JinBodhi's compassionate chanting of Padmasambhava's Heart Mantra was about to be released. Its sacred Sanskrit chanting is deeply moving and carries powerful blessings. To create positive affinities with sentient beings, everyone was invited to joyfully sponsor its release. My sister and I decided to offer a sponsorship on behalf of our father. To our amazement, something extraordinary happened—our father immediately received an incredible blessing of powerful energy.
A couple of days ago, while talking with my younger sister on the phone, the first thing she asked was, "Did you do more merit-making for Dad? Was it chanting the Buddha's name or offering lights? Dad's tailbone doesn't hurt anymore. Not only can he lie flat in bed now, but he's also back to sleeping soundly and deeply, just like he did more than two years ago. His energy is excellent now! Every time I see his health improving, my first thought is: You must have been doing more merit-making for Dad over there!"
When I spoke with my father today, he happily told me that the tailbone compression pain he had suffered from for more than two years had completely disappeared. The constant discomfort had prevented him from sitting or lying comfortably and forced him to sleep only on his side; it had made even turning over difficult. But now it’s gone. This past week, he was finally able to lie flat on his back and sleep. His uninterrupted sleep increased from only one or two hours to four or five hours. When he wakes up in the morning, he feels completely refreshed and is in an especially joyful mood. Smiling happily, my father said with great confidence that he is gradually recovering. I am profoundly grateful for Grandmaster JinBodhi's compassionate blessings!
