Welcome to Master JinBodhi’s Wellness Seminar – Q&A On Parenting
(Hello, Master. I hate being treated like a baby. I am an adult and I know what I am doing. How do I communicate with my parents, so they worry less about me?)
If you tell them beforehand what you do, they won’t be worried about you. The most important thing is to be trustworthy. If you are celebrating a friend’s birthday, tell them you will be home by 10. Make promises, be well-behaved and don’t drink alcohol. Do what you promised. Don’t drink alcohol; they will know by your smell if you drank. If you are trustworthy, and tell your parents what you are going to do, there won’t be trust issues.
Some parents may still forbid you to go out, but most parents will give you the green light. While kids are growing up, they need to make friends and socialize. You need to keep a stable mindset. Puberty makes you rebellious, so your parents are usually worried. “Can I trust him?” “What if he chose wrongly?” “What if he lied to us?” It is your immaturity that makes your parents worry about you.
Invite your parents to join your school activities. Tell your parents that you really want them to join. After a few times, your parents will know you more. They will see your self-control and wisdom. They will rest assured that you are OK. If they know nothing about you, your parents will become anxious. “Is he doing well at school?” “Can we trust his friends?”
They overthink if you aren’t sharing. They want to know what you are hiding. They don’t want to hurt you by directly asking you. They are worried if they don’t ask. Take the initiative to express yourself.
Practice well, live healthily and keep learning.
