What Is Reincarnation?

You may have heard of the concepts of “past lives” and “present life” and encountered various stories about reincarnation. The enduring interest in this topic demonstrates that people have been curious about and exploring it since ancient times. What does reincarnation mean? What are the reasons for the cycle of life and death? Read on to understand the concept of reincarnation, the reasons for reincarnation, and why sentient beings go through the cycle of rebirth in the Six Realms. What can be done to break away from the shackles of reincarnation to achieve inner peace and happiness?

What Is the Cycle of Rebirth?

In summary, the concept of reincarnation is a philosophical theory. Buddhism teaches that reincarnation is a cycle of life and death, where the soul departs from the body after death and is reborn into a new form of life. Life takes on different appearances and forms, continuously experiencing the cycle of birth and death. The reborn lifeform can belong to any of the Six Realms, which includes those of humans, Heavenly beings, animals, and more. The cycle of reincarnation revolves endlessly, like a wheel turning without cessation.

Reasons for Going Through the Cycle of Rebirth

What are the reasons for the cycle of life and death? The Buddha stated in The Sutra of Complete Enlightenment that all sentient beings, from the beginningless past, undergo samsara due to various attachments and desires. It is people’s greed, ignorance, anger, and other afflictions that make them attached to other existences in the world and lead them to sow numerous seeds of both good and evil. As a result, they remain trapped in the cycle of birth and death, unable to escape.

The Lotus Sutra describes sentient beings in the Three Worlds as being in a house on fire, filled with great fear and horror. Due to their inability to understand the truth of being in a burning house, they are led by ignorance and greed, continually being reborn in different forms endlessly. Only by breaking free from the bondage of ignorance and attachment by achieving enlightenment can one escape from the cycle of birth and death and attain joy beyond suffering.

What Are the Six Realms of Reincarnation?

In the sutra, the Buddha says that all sentient beings in the Three Worlds cycle through the Six Realms like walking on a rotating fire wheel. This metaphorically illustrates that all sentient beings continue the cycle of rebirth among the Six Realms, which include the Heavenly realm, demi-god realm, human realm, animal realm, hungry ghost realm, and hell realm. Gods (Heavenly), demi-gods, and humans belong to the three good realms, while animals, hungry ghosts, and hellish beings belong to the three evil realms.

After the end of a person’s life, they will automatically be reborn into the realm corresponding to the good or bad actions accumulated in their past life, following the law of causality. If one has accumulated more good karma, they may be reborn as a human with varying degrees of fortune. Due to the accumulation of virtuous deeds from past lives, one may become extremely wealthy and influential, or even attain nobility or sainthood. If their merits and virtues are even greater, they may be reborn into higher forms of life, such as celestial beings.

On the other hand, those with more negative karma may be reborn into lower lifeforms such as animals, or experience the hellish realm, regardless of their social status or wealth they have while living. The place one will be reborn in depends on what they have done when alive. Here are the Six Realms that one could be reborn into:

  1. Heavenly Realm: The Heavenly realms are divided into the desire realm, form realm, and formless realm. The higher the level of the Heavenly realm one is born into, the higher their states of mind are, and the fewer desires they hold. Beings in the Heavenly realms enjoy various pleasures and have longer lifespans than humans, but they still face decay and death when their blessings are exhausted. Those with great virtuous deeds have the chance to be reborn in the Heavenly realms.
  2. Asura Realm: Also known as the realm of the demi-gods. The beings in this realm enjoy the blessings of the Heavenly realm but lack the virtues of Heavenly beings. Male demi-gods have unattractive appearances; they are prone to aggression and anger and often engage in conflicts with Heavenly beings. Female demigods are beautiful but possess a strong sense of jealousy. Buddhist scriptures record that those reborn in this realm often do so due to the karmic forces of anger, pride, and doubt. Those who engage in acts of generosity driven by a desire for fame and success, and those who are competitive and seek attention, are prone to being reborn in the Asura Realm.
  3. Human Realm: Humans experience more sorrow than happiness. Humans are prone to the Five Poisons, but they also possess compassion, kindness, and sympathy, with the opportunity and ability to do good deeds to accumulate merits and virtues. The human realm is considered the most suitable for practicing Buddhist teachings, with the potential to elevate one’s spiritual level and escape the cycle of reincarnation.
  4. Animal Realm: “Animal” refers to birds, beasts, insects, and more. Beings fall in this realm mostly due to various evil deeds committed in past lives through body, speech, and mind, as well as persistent greed, anger, and ignorance. Beings in this realm often experience suffering, being enslaved, slaughtered for food, or fighting among their own kind. The beings’ fate is beyond their control, with greatly varying lifespans and forms.
  5. Hungry Ghost Realm: Those reborn in this realm have accumulated negative karma related to greed, jealousy, and miserliness in their past lives. Beings in this realm suffer from prolonged hunger and thirst, and even when they find food and eat it, it will quickly burn, causing additional suffering.
  6. Hell Realm: The hell realm is a place of severe punishment for those who committed great evils. In various hells, sinful individuals undergo relentless and cruel punishments. The Earth Store Sutra describes countless hells, with the relentless hell being the most painful of them, with torture that lasts for eons. Beings in the hell realm endure immense pain until they repay all karmic debts, after which they can be reborn.

How to Avoid the Endless Suffering of Reincarnation?

Everyone hopes to avoid the cycle of rebirth. Since being reborn in the Six Realms is determined by the good and evil actions of past lives, one can change their destination after death by practicing diligently, performing good deeds, and accumulating merits. How can this be achieved? Here are three methods to avoid suffering the cycle of endless rebirth:

1. Filial Piety and Gratitude Toward Parents

Our parents play a crucial role in shaping not only our physical appearance but also our energy, virtues, and the karmic forces that surround us. Grandmaster JinBodhi often reminds us that parents are like buddhas and bodhisattvas in a child’s life, sacrificing and dedicating their entire lives to raising their children. Therefore, as human beings, the first step is to understand the importance of filial piety to parents and repay their kindness with love and gratitude. While our parents are still alive, express love and gratitude through practical actions. Additionally, we may also sincerely recite Buddhist sutras, pray, and offer lamps for them to the Buddha, seeking blessings for their health, longevity, and happiness.

2. Do No Evil and Practice Kindness

To avoid the suffering of samsara, it is advisable to engage in virtuous actions.

Those who fall into evil paths do so mostly because of improper thoughts and intentions. Some even commit harmful deeds for personal gain. With evil sown, they shall bear the corresponding consequences of their actions. Buddhist sutras remind us that even after countless lifetimes, the accumulated karma will not disappear, and when the conditions arise, one will inevitably experience the consequences. Therefore, in daily life, it is important to cultivate a compassionate heart and constantly remind oneself not to engage in evil deeds while actively pursuing virtuous actions. For example, when encountering the elderly, weak, or poor, one should offer assistance or economic relief. In conflicts with others, practicing patience and creating positive connections can help develop a charitable heart. Moreover, dedicating oneself to the service of Buddhist practice can accumulate immeasurable merit and blessings.

3. Light-Offerings, Chanting, and Cultivating the Six Perfections

In Buddhism, light symbolizes wisdom and dispels all darkness. Sincerely making light-offerings and chanting the Buddha’s name can open one to the luminous blessings of buddhas and bodhisattvas to help eliminate bad karma. The sutra mentions that chanting the name of the Buddha can eradicate the sins of 80 billion kalpas. Even those who have committed severe crimes and are bound to fall into hellish realms can, if guided by a good spiritual mentor at the time of death, understand the vows and virtues of Amitabha Buddha. This understanding can lead them to generate faith and not fall into the Three Evil Paths, being reborn in the Pure Land.

Additionally, the Six Perfections in Buddhist practice—generosity, discipline, tolerance, diligence, meditation, and wisdom—are essential conditions for achieving enlightenment. Engaging in the practice of these Six Perfections not only swiftly eliminates bad karma and purifies body and mind, but also helps accumulate merit and virtues. It nurtures a heart of compassion and great love, eradicates unwholesome thoughts, and reduces the generation of negative causes; by practicing the Six Perfections, one not only gets a bright passage after death but also transforms their present life to attain radiant wisdom.

How much assistance can we provide for the deceased if we make light-offerings and chant the Buddha’s name for them? Read the two true stories below from Bodhi Meditation to find out:

1. Sincerely Chanting Buddha’s Name to Liberate the Spirit of an Aborted Fetus | Chan Sok Peng, Singapore

Many years ago, during my pregnancy, I experienced abnormal bleeding, and the doctor recommended an abortion to me. At that time, I knew nothing about Buddhism, and I was ignorant of the principles of cause and effect. Without much thought, I hastily accepted the advice.

Later, I joined the Bodhi Meditation Chanting Class. Grandmaster JinBodhi mentioned that during the seventh lunar month, we should sincerely chant and make light-offerings for our departed relatives or the spirits of aborted fetuses, praying to the buddhas and bodhisattvas to guide them to the Pure Land and free them from suffering in the evil realms. Grandmaster JinBodhi’s teachings filled me with deep remorse for my hasty decision, and I wished to make amends to my child. I immediately made light-offerings and sincerely chanted to pray for the blessings of the buddhas and bodhisattvas, that they would guide my child away from fear and resentment.

During the following days of the chanting class, as I chanted for my children, I vaguely saw a scene of a child carrying a school bag, as if indicating that the child had been reborn into a good family. This scene brought me relief, assuaging the guilt and quelling the lingering emotions deep within me. I believe the child has received the blessings and protection of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas and will have a future filled with brightness and auspiciousness.

2. A Light-Offering on the Wall of Ten Thousand Buddhas Liberated Departed Relatives of Sufferings | Shouzhao, San Francisco, USA

Shortly after my husband passed away, just before the Medicine Buddha Dharma Event, I made a light-offering on the Wall of Ten Thousand Buddhas for him, hoping that the Medicine Buddha would guide him to the Pure Land.

Then, I went on to join the Chanting Class. On the third day of the class, I saw my husband and three other deceased relatives—my brother-in-law, his son-in-law, and his granddaughter. They all requested that my husband light lamps for them. I immediately promised to help them, and the three deceased relatives expressed their gratitude to my husband and joyfully bowed to him.

After making the light-offerings, I stopped seeing these deceased relatives in my dreams, but I knew they had found a peaceful destination. A year later, on my husband’s birthday, I dreamed of him sitting by my bedside talking with me. His face was young and radiant, devoid of the dark expression he had when he was ill. On the same day, my son dreamed of having dinner with his dad, noting that his father’s appetite was particularly good. I am grateful for the blessings and protection of Grandmaster JinBodhi and the Buddhas and bodhisattvas!
