In this video, Grandmaster JinBodhi tells a story about growing grapes in Hainan. Although the farmer’s success was not realized overnight, it was just a matter of time and hard work. Although this is not the first time hearing such a story, it’s still encouraging.

Success comes with persistence. The only way to realize your dream is to stick with it until the end.

Here is a story of one of my disciples in China. He is a brilliant scientist who specializes in cultivating grapes. It was around 1995 when he taught poor farmers to plant grapes. A deal was made; he would buy the farmers’ grapes for his business. He grew 2 kinds of grapes; one for eating and one for wine-making. So he taught them grape-planting skills and then bought the grape harvest. Then he sold the grapes to wineries and markets.

He was already a wealthy man at that time. He is called a “grape scientist” because of his knowledge of grape cultivation. He was already a billionaire before he started his grape business in Hainan. His students made money offerings to him out of gratitude. They became rich thanks to his teachings. In fact, the scientist didn’t ask for any money in return. His students offered their savings willingly.

He went to Hainan province years later. The northern province of Shandong is freezing in winter. It is colder than Vancouver. Hainan province is the opposite, it is hot. In terms of latitude, it is quite similar to Hong Kong. In a hot climate, grapes typically won’t grow. He was invited to plant grapes in Hainan by the provincial governor. The governor knew of him as the “grape scientist.” In the ’90s, grapes were sold at 30 RMB per kg.

The governor offered him land for his grape cultivation. The scientist was shocked at the price of grapes. At last, he accepted the deal, but not because of money. He took the challenge to test himself. He is a kind man.

He practiced at Bodhi Meditation. He rejected a good piece of land. He asked for one that all farmers had given up on. He asked to plant grapes in the mountainous region. No sane farmer would grow crops there. Why? Because of the rocks and pebbles in the ground. No way would crops grow there.

Perhaps the scientist’s goodwill had landed him in trouble. He sought the help of those he had taught in Shandong. The first task was to clear away the rocks. It would take about 2 years to accomplish this task. There were more than 70 male helpers, and one female helper. They were all grape-planting experts, thanks to the scientist.

After 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, they left, one after another. The scientist began studying and planting on the cleared patches. His remaining students continued to clear rocks. The goal was to fill the land with grapevines. After 2 years, all the guys had left. Only the female student stayed. She sacrificed her youth and health for the scientist’s work. Moved by her loyalty, the scientist decided to reward her, giving her a 35% share of all the lands developed in Hainan.

How much exactly is that worth? To put it simply, she would earn about $10 million per year. With more land cleared, more grapes could be harvested. That meant more revenue. The grapes were never sold at retail, but to wholesalers. That meant less work for them. At present, all grapes in Hainan are grown by the scientist and this woman. The prices are of course higher now. I think she makes $50 million a year now. she can go on to make $100 million with more developed lands.

The guys who left after a year or more earned nothing. The lady who stayed for 2 years earns about $50-100 million per year. Persistence matters. Don’t pursue your dream just for financial gain. Do it because you think it’s right. Do it out of kindness and responsibility.

Persistence is crucial in chasing your dreams. Some teens have told me they’ve had to change dreams. Why? Because the dream they once had was “too challenging.” It was so hard to make it come true, so they let it go.

For example, someone wants to be a doctor. After hearing from his friends, or his family doctor, he changed his mind. Sure, why not? But let me tell you this. Obstacles are part of realizing your dreams. Persistence is the key to overcoming all obstacles.

Those who fight until the end reach the goal. Success is for those who stay, fight, and never give up. Happiness and a sense of achievement await on the path to fulfilling dreams.
