(I Don’t Like My Current Major, What Should I Do?)

(Hello, Master. I am Xing-yu. Many university students choose a major for themselves. But some feel lost when they are halfway through their studies. Some doubt whether they really like what they chose. For me, I thought I liked the major I chose. I thought the major would suit me. Now that a period of time has passed, I don’t like the major I chose. What should I do now?)

How long have you been in this major? One year? (2.5 years.) I see. Don’t switch; finish it. And your major is? Public Relations? (Yes, that’s what I do.) What do PR people do? Accompany clients to smoke and drink? (They do event planning.) You mean event planning shouldn’t be a part of PR? (No.) Then what’s your problem? If you were going to choose again, what would you choose? (Early childhood education.)

I see. There is quite a huge difference between Education and PR. Judging by personality, I think you are better suited to PR. We are short of experts in PR. Working as a PR professional, organizing campaigns and making sure events go smoothly, you need to have a good relationship with the media. Without a good relationship with the media, your flaws will be magnified and everyone will see them.

Our media prefers to show the bad things. The bad news makes the headlines. News such as “Daughter-in-law kills mother-in-law” makes the front page. A story about a daughter-in-law with filial piety isn’t newsworthy. No one reports this, because it is not shocking. The media always looks for shocking news.

Many corporations separate themselves from the media and the government. On the other hand, they wish to open themselves to other corporations. What they need is someone to do the “bridging”. The future of your PR major is bright. Big corporations wish to make themselves known in major exhibitions. You will be hired to speak for and with them. Face-to-face communication is important. The prospects of a PR major sure are bright.

Don’t focus only on event planning. Learn more; read more books about marketing and psychology. Don’t forget to build up your public-speaking skills. Learn to confidently express yourself. Many are shy and lack confidence when speaking to others. Many Chinese people are quite shy. Many Chinese guys are quite shy. Raise your hand if you are. I will raise mine. I am quite shy. We are shy, but not because we have done something bad or we are plotting something evil. We are just not bold enough. It is our shyness that makes us avoid interacting with others. We are all like that.

We talked about this 2 days ago. Everyone has moments when they lack confidence. In order to realize our goals, we must overcome our shyness. People can conquer their fears to achieve their goals. To feed their family, some can overcome their shyness. It is our goal that conquers our shyness and fear. There are needs that make us ignore what others say. We now understand why our ancestors were willing to do jobs nobody likes such as collect garbage. They knew such jobs were despised. They didn’t care as long as they could feed their family. They worked with smiles on their faces.

It is normal to feel shy when speaking with others. Don’t just study to pass exams. At your age, you have a good memory. You can quickly memorize whatever you read or hear. You may feel what you learn now is useless. But once knowledge enters your brain, it becomes part of your wisdom. Wisdom is a unique thing. Some people are not smart but they absorb everything they learn. Yet when they are questioned, they fail to answer.

This is part of my childhood experience. I learned stuff, but I just couldn’t answer exam questions. Maybe I was nervous. I don’t know. That is why I always got low marks on my exams. Whatever I learned in school has remained in my brain. I now apply that knowledge in my daily life. I didn’t have a problem memorizing, I had a problem recalling. That is why I did badly in exams.

Now, back to your major. I think PR is good. Plenty of jobs are waiting for PR graduates. Now we have more kindergarten teachers than PR professionals. I think you are better suited to your current major. You are pretty and have a cheerful face; these attributes are good for PR. Please also participate in large-scale event planning. Learn how to host an event, and how to communicate with people. These are important skills to learn.
