The Meaning of Compassion

Compassion and great love are often spoken of, but what is the true meaning of compassion? What are its genuine characteristics? This article highlights the words of Grandmaster JinBodhi to help you understand compassion and grasp its true meaning and power; it will also inspire you with stories of compassion. Read on to find out how compassion brings blessings and wisdom, making life more fulfilling.

A Benevolent and Tolerant Heart for All Beings

Compassion means the heart to bring happiness to others and alleviate the suffering of all sentient beings. Grandmaster JinBodhi says that true compassion is a special form of love, akin to the spirit of a mother caring for her child, encompassing concern, inclusiveness, sincerity, love, and an understanding heart. The love generated by compassion is expansive and allows one to embrace all lifeforms with compassion and mercy, from elements of Nature such as mountains, rivers, flowers, and animals to any person in need.

Is Compassion the Same as Selfish Love?

How does compassion differ from selfish love? As mentioned earlier, compassion is like the spirit of a mother caring for her child, but the love parents have for their children is limited to their own offspring and cannot be considered great compassion. True compassion is a form of selfless and Universal love, akin to the sun shining every day and nurturing all of Earth’s lifeforms with warmth, energy, vitality, and creativity. Those with great compassion can foster a spirit of dedication and altruism, sharing benefits with those in need without expecting anything in return. Compassion also enables people to treat others with kindness, tolerance, and empathy, showcasing compassion and gentleness in interactions. If we can cultivate such a heart, we can attain true health and fundamental wisdom.

The Conquests and Compassion of King Ashoka

Around 2,000 years ago in India, there was a leader of a small kingdom named King Ashoka. As a ruler, King Ashoka embarked on numerous wars to expand his territory. However, after witnessing the scene of bodies strewn across a field following a particular battle, he was deeply horrified by the terror of slaughter. In remorse and reflection, he turned to Buddhism and began to govern his country with compassionate policies.

Legend has it that a major disaster occurred in the region under King Ashoka’s rule, causing many people to lose their homes, food, and families. Upon learning of this, King Ashoka was deeply troubled and immediately ordered the establishment of relief stations. He inspected the disaster area, distributed food, medicine, and other supplies to the victims, and reconstructed houses, schools, hospitals, and other public facilities. Moreover, King Ashoka not only exempted the subject states from taxes but also provided support when those states faced disasters.

King Ashoka also implemented policies promoting Buddhism. Throughout the entire Indian territory, he built 84,000 stupas as symbols of Buddha’s compassion. The pillars he erected symbolize the conquest and governance of the world through compassion. The inscriptions on these pillars advocate respect for Buddhist teachings, discouraging evil while promoting virtue, filial piety, and the cultivation of benevolence and compassion. These compassionate actions and policies earned him the respect and love of the people, further promoting the spread and development of Buddhism. King Ashoka’s spirit of compassion is what is referred to as “great compassion.” He won the hearts of his people using compassion, kindness, and warmth, leaving a legacy.

Compassion and Merits

Compassion is not just a concept or slogan; it should be integrated and applied to daily life with profound understanding. Grandmaster JinBodhi, with his decades of self-cultivation practice, has been embodying and experiencing the path of compassion, and using his wisdom he summarizes how compassion initiates positive energy. To transform fate and have a fulfilling life, read on to find out what Grandmaster JinBodhi says about the benefits of practicing compassion:

1.Transformation in Facial Appearance, Personality, Temperament, and Weaknesses

The love generated by a compassionate person is expansive, encompassing love for all things in the world, and there is no hostility toward anyone. When we truly integrate compassion into our lives and approach others with kindness and tolerance, we will gradually find that the flesh on our hands and feet becomes softer. Over time, our appearance, character, and even our previous bad temper and personal weaknesses can change, and our body and mind will also become healthier.

2.Interpersonal Relationships

When facing conflicts, we can keep calm and wise without being affected by negative emotions if we come from a place of compassion. For example, when someone releases negative, angry, or intense messages toward you, if you respond with a compassionate and gentle attitude instead of retaliation, the other person’s anger will dissipate. Therefore, if we’re compassionate, tolerant, respectful, and understanding while dealing with insults or hostile words, we can improve our relationships with others.

3.Compassion Brings Happiness and Joy to Oneself and Others

Understanding and praising others are behaviors triggered by a compassionate heart because compassionate people can see the merits of others and are willing to offer happiness and a sense of wellbeing through warm and sincere words. Grandmaster JinBodhi mentions that genuine praise comes from the heart without any ulterior motives. When we sincerely praise people, we will receive genuine feedback from them, perhaps a smile, a word of thanks, or the same sincere praise and blessings from them, making our day full of happiness.
