The Winter Solstice is the day of the year marked by the fewest hours of daylight and the longest night. From this point onward, daylight gradually increases, and yang energy begins to rise.
The period around the Winter Solstice is the best time to replenish qi (vital energy). It is ideal to eat warm and nourishing foods while avoiding foods that are too spicy or cold.
A bowl of qi-boosting red bean porridge warms the stomach, dispels cold, and nourishes qi and blood, as well as being a symbol of completeness and good fortune.
Replenish your qi well during the Winter Solstice to lay a solid foundation for good health in the coming year.
Ingredients (3 servings):
- Red beans: 150g
- Glutinous rice balls: as needed
- Rice: 30g
- Water: as needed
Method:
- Soak the red beans for 4 hours. Add them to the pot together with the fresh rice, then add an appropriate amount of water.
- Cook over medium heat for 60–90 minutes, until the red beans are soft and naturally split open.
- Finally, add the glutinous rice balls and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, until all the rice balls float to the surface.
Friendly Reminder:
- Glutinous rice is sticky and not easy to digest, so it is advised that seniors, children, and people with weaker digestive systems consume it in moderation.
- Individuals with stomach conditions (such as gastric ulcer, acid reflux, acute gastroenteritis, bloating), diabetes, or those recovering from illness should consult a doctor before eating and are advised to eat only small amounts and chew thoroughly.
