Is It Necessary to Worship the Earth Deity? A Guide to Honoring the Earth Deity at Home

In Chinese folk beliefs, the Earth Deity (地基主, Dì Jī Zhǔ) is regarded as the guardian spirit of the home. Traditionally, worshiping the Earth Deity is a way to express gratitude for his protection and to show respect and appreciation to the land. Therefore, whether moving into a new home, opening a shop, or during important solar terms, worshiping the Earth Deity is considered a crucial way to enhance blessings. So, is it necessary to worship the Earth Deity? What can we do to bring more auspiciousness and peace to our homes and improve family fortune?

What Is the Earth Deity? The Guardian Spirit of the Residence

The Earth Deity holds a special and important role in Chinese folk beliefs. He is also known as the House God (宅神), Landlord Deity (地主神), or Land Master (地主公), similar to a guardian spirit of the house. He is believed to protect the peace and harmony of the household. It is said that the Earth Deity could be the soul of someone who once lived in that place, or the ancestral spirit of early settlers buried nearby, who became a guardian over time.

Why Should We Worship the Earth Deity?

Many people often confuse the Earth Deity with the Earth God (土地公, Tǔ Dì Gōng). In fact, the Earth God is a deity who governs a village, city, or larger region. For instance, a city may have Earth Gods in the east, west, south, and north, jointly maintaining its peace. In contrast, the Earth Deity is merely the guardian spirit of a specific house, only responsible for one household. Every home has its own Earth Deity who offers protection to that family alone.

Why Should We Worship the Earth Deity? Is It a Must?

In traditional folk beliefs, worshiping the Earth Deity is thought to bring prosperity, ensure health and safety for the whole family, and ward off negative energies and misfortune.

Do we have to worship the Earth Deity when moving into a new home? After the initial worship, must we continue during important festivals every year? Do those living in apartments need to worship the Earth Deity? These are common questions. Ultimately, whether to worship the Earth Deity depends on personal beliefs and family customs. Generally, people will choose to do so during important events such as moving into a new home, renovations, groundbreaking, or setting up household altars, to pray for peace at home.

Simpler, More Effective, and Auspicious Ways to Worship the Earth Deity

Traditional folk rituals are often complex and full of formalities due to generations of transmission. For modern people seeking peace and blessings at home, Bodhi Meditation offers several simple yet sincere methods to express reverence toward the Earth Deity and receive His protection. Below are three sacred, simple, and effective ways to worship the Earth Deity:

1. Offer Light to the Earth Deity Before the Buddha

Offering lights before the Buddha and praying for blessings for the Earth Deity helps elevate his spiritual level and supports his path toward liberation. Since the Earth Deity is a yin spirit, the light offering should be specifically for the departed.

2. Chant the Buddha’s Name or Recite Sutras, and Dedicate Merits to the Earth Deity

Chanting the Buddha’s name and reciting sutras are among the simplest and most effective ways to generate merit, as taught by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. If done with sincerity and focus, the resulting merit is vast and inconceivable. Whether specifically dedicated or drawn from your daily practice, these merits are the most supreme offerings to the Earth Deity—far beyond food or incense.

3. Gilding a Buddha or Bodhisattva Statue for the Earth Deity

Gilding a Buddha or Bodhisattva statue on behalf of the Earth Deity allows him to receive divine blessings, quickly ascend to the heavens, enjoy celestial joy, and ultimately attain great liberation and freedom.

Offering Light to the Earth Deity Helped Sell a House Smoothly | Lai Mao, Klang Dragon Spring Bodhi Meditation Center, Malaysia

A friend of mine had a luxury house that had been vacant for four years and couldn’t be sold—even after lowering the price. In May 2022, I suggested he offer a 7-day light to the Earth Deity at the Bodhi Meditation Center. To our amazement, on the sixth day of offering, a Malay buyer visited the house and fell in love with it immediately, placing a deposit on the spot.

In fact, it’s not easy for Malay buyers to purchase Chinese-owned property. Even more surprisingly, the buyer paid RM20,000 more than the neighboring house. Three months later, the bank loan was also approved smoothly. My friend was extremely grateful to Grandmaster JinBodhi and began learning life philosophy and Dharma from him online. Deep gratitude to Grandmaster JinBodhi!

Offering Lights Helped Resolve Negative Karma and Rental Issues | Guo Yuxing, Klang Dragon Spring Bodhi Meditation Center, Malaysia

My brother had a tenant who had rented his house for over ten years, always paying rent on time. But recently, due to business struggles, he owed three months’ rent, refused to move out, and even became aggressive, blaming my brother for being heartless after so many years.

I felt that calling the police wasn’t the best option, so I went to the Bodhi Meditation Center to ask for guidance from the Buddhas. I sincerely explained my brother’s issue and drew a divination lot, which was a “bad lot,” indicating: “Be conservative and wait for the right time.” The advice was not to be stubborn and to listen to others’ suggestions.

The oracle interpreter recommended offering lights to generate merit and improve the situation. Hence, I offered two 7-day lights—one blessing light for the living to resolve karmic ties between my brother and the tenant, and one blessing light for the departed for the Earth Deity of the house.

After returning home, I showed my brother the divination lot and advised him not to call the police. He agreed. The next day at noon, the tenant unexpectedly invited him out for tea, calmly expressing his wish to stay and promising to repay the rent—immediately paying one month’s rent on the spot.

The Medicine Buddha oracle reading and light offering were incredibly effective! I am sincerely grateful for the guidance and blessings of the Buddhas.

Offering Light to the Earth Deity Solved a Home Leakage Issue | Quan Ce, Seremban Bodhi Meditation Center, Malaysia

My daughter bought a two-story house and, after renovation, was ready to move in. However, just before moving, they discovered the master bedroom leaked whenever it rained, flooding the floor. Since the house was still under warranty, they called the developer’s technicians—but even after seven visits over three months, the problem persisted.

One day, while visiting, I heard my son-in-law sigh: “It’s raining again. The house will leak again.” That’s when I learned they’d been deeply troubled by this issue. I found that theirs was the only house on the street with this problem. I suddenly recalled Grandmaster JinBodhi’s teaching: when there are repeated home disturbances, you can offer a light to the Earth Deity.

I then offered a light for the Earth Deity of their new home. Coincidentally, it rained again right after that. This time, the technician found a small hole in the roof—finally discovering the real cause. After patching it up, the problem never happened again. I’m so grateful to Bodhi Meditation and the compassionate protection of the Buddhas!
