I have mentioned my master many times. He was a respected man. People would visit his place to pay their respect.
One day, someone invited my master to visit his house. That person was Li, an ex-military officer. As a soldier serving in a city, he established some connections with some higher-ranked officers. He started a small business after being demobilized. It took him some time, but he did quite well. He would come visit my master during Lunar New Year with gifts. He was a humble, easygoing and respectful man.
He was driving back to his hometown, and my master tagged along. An old man was selling popcorn on the roadside: “Brother Li! You are back!” They hugged each other and exchanged greetings. “How’s your lower-back pain?” “It is fine, thanks to your electric mattress. I can’t thank you enough! May the Buddha bless you!” Greetings and hugs kept coming from the village entrance. Everyone liked him and they were thankful for having him.
Half of his earnings were spent on helping the villagers. They were all poor farmers who relied on good weather to make a living. Thanks to Li, the villagers were financially better off. That is why he was so revered. Even so, he treated everyone humbly, like a close friend. We were quite surprised to see a wealthy man so down-to-earth. It took quite an effort to make it to his place. Why? Because everyone wanted to greet and hug him. He had helped so many people.
At Li’s place, he respectfully sought my master’s opinion. “Master, please advise me on some feng shui adjustments I can do.” My master looked quite satisfied. “No adjustments needed,” my master said. “Really, the buddhas and bodhisattvas are looking after your house.” I didn’t quite get it. I asked, “You mean he had got another master’s advice?” “No, he had got the deities’ help.” “How?” “Using his kindness.” For good people, a graveyard will become valuable land with good feng shui. Ghosts will send money to them. That is how things will be. Everyone will protect them. They are so kind.
To forge your own good fate, live in a place with good feng shui. To make your fate better and more auspicious, you firstly need to be kind. Also, you need to act kindly. Offer your kindness. Say things that make people happy. Don’t be fake; just give compliments and talk respectfully. That will make you more likable. This helps one to gain merits. If you speak harshly, you will hurt others. To put it simply, just do as Li does.
Li is a millionaire now with good health. I think he is about 75 now. He is chubby but healthy. When you have accumulated enough merits, you don’t have to worry about what you eat. This is the blessing of true wealth. Many poor people lose their lives once they become rich. True wealth is not obtained by luck; it’s cultivated. How? By practicing kindness and compassion; that is the key.
