My 10-year-old child is very selfish and has a tendency for violence. What should I do?
Understanding Buddhism helps your kid to understand how to love all beings. Young people may commit misdeeds because they don’t understand the effects of their behaviors. They don’t understand the difficulties of life, the challenges their parents face and how hard it is to earn a living. If they did, they would be mindful of their behaviors.
As a parent, you can help to cultivate your child’s loving heart. Have them grow plants or flowers, or care for small animals. You can start by planting a seed. Buy soybean or red-bean seeds. Together with your child, plant the seeds in a pot. Teach them how to take care of the plant, how often to water it and how to fertilize it. Watch it grow every day. Over time, this develops a loving heart. The process of growing a life from nothing will nurture their love for all beings. When they have a loving heart, they will have less tendency to harm others.
Whenever convenient, bring them to Buddhist events. Buddhism promotes love and compassion for all beings; through the activities, your child will cultivate compassion. Through participation, your child will develop compassion. Once they become compassionate, they will do less harm.
Let’s cultivate our minds, live healthily and continue learning.
