Hello, dear friends. (Hello, Master.) I am glad to meet you all again. While I was sitting and preparing for today’s teachings, I was thinking: What do humans fear the most? For many, the answer is death.
Once, on my birthday, my master asked, “What is the most valued thing in life?” I answered, “Money and gold.” He said I was not entirely wrong. “What about you, Master?” “Breathing.” I was young at that time. I didn’t know why breathing was “most valued.” My master said, “Give this a try: Close your mouth and pinch your nose. Stay this way for 5 minutes. I will watch the time. You need to stop inhaling and exhaling.” I said I would try. I was a kid then. I couldn’t even last one minute.
He told me, “In this human realm, money is less valuable than breathing. Money is important, but way less so than breathing.” He said that heart disease ran in his family, and his grandma died because of it. He might have heart disease too. He said whenever he got tired or had emotional swings, he could feel his heart hurt. There were a few times he couldn’t breathe. That made him awaken to the understanding that for humans, nothing is more important than breathing.
The air we breathe is invisible and untouchable. The air can’t be packed and sent to you. It is real, yet so unreal. It seems nonexistent, yet we couldn’t live without it. What we can see or touch is also important, but can become unreal sometimes. The money, gold or other valuables that you hold dear may disappear suddenly. It may be stolen or used up. The meal is delicious, and this fruit is gorgeous, but it will all rot after a few days. All of it still exists, but it is rotten and can’t be eaten anymore. Your love doesn’t last forever either.
Love it or hate it, humans can never live without air. When you can’t breathe, you know your life is in danger. My master said, “When I have difficulty breathing, I try to experience the joys and sorrows the suffering brings to me.” “Master, are you OK? Do you have brain damage from lack of oxygen? You are suffocating, your lips have turned blue, yet you still want to comprehend this experience?” He said, “Yeah. Do you see me struggling? Do you see me crying for help?” “No. I thought you were meditating.”
He replied, “I actually had a heart condition at that time.” “And you still wanted to experience that?” He said that fear of death is one of our biggest obstacles in life. You existed unknowingly when you were born. Your mothers brought you to the world. You couldn’t control it. You couldn’t decide. You came to the world. When it is time for you to leave, you must learn how to face it. He said, “Well, I am still alive now. So I want to experience the moment before death; and see whether I can be calm and fearless.” “But your heart condition came back. What if you really die?” “Then that is my fate.”
After each time he experienced this process, he would rub his palms together and even laugh. “Wow, today I experienced another way to die.” He said, “I felt my chest distress, and I was aware of my emotional changes. Was I emotional? Was I yelling at you?” I replied, “No. You were suffocating; if I were you, I would have smashed the table. You were so calm that I thought you were meditating.” He said, “Yesterday I was doing the same thing. You guys didn’t even know.” “We didn’t know.” He continued to joke with us the next day because he was happy that he got to experience another suffering.
I said, “It is so strange. Other people meditate. You practice experiencing heart problems.” He said, “I learned about the crucial moment when I was suffocating and could have died, when I was without breath for about 10 seconds.” He said, “I was curious about where I could go. I wanted to see the whole process. I also wanted to test my meditation skills. I wanted to see whether I was panicking, and whether I lost my temper because of feeling uncomfortable. Did I vent any emotion?” Then he asked, “Did you see me acting strangely?” “No. If you hadn’t told me, I wouldn’t have known you were almost suffocating.”
“I was joking with you guys yesterday, and through this process I even poured milk tea for you all. The waiter wanted to pour the tea for you. I got the teapot and did it. After I could breathe smoothly, I could be with you all; to me, even the teapot looked very amiable.” He continued, “Oh, my lovely teapot, I almost had no chance to lift you up. So after I could do so again, I felt I was reborn. I love this teapot.” I think my master’s thoughts were: “I am the teapot, and the teapot is me; I am the milk tea, and the milk tea is me; I am the waiter, and the waiter is me.” That is why he was so happy while pouring milk tea for each disciple.
To him, everyone was equal, regardless of social status. He had become one with the world. He loved everything he could see and imagine in the world; for everything he could touch in the world, he thought, “I am you, and you are me. I am the tree, and the tree is me. I am the mountain, and the mountain is me. I am the river, and the river is me. I am the ocean, and the ocean is me. I am the void, and the void is me.” Think about it. This wasn’t a poem. My master wasn’t an improvising poet. This is a sort of enlightenment. There is no difference between “me” and “them”.
A meditation beginner practices for physical and mental health, while an advanced practitioner aims to become one with the Universe. From my master’s words and body language, I understood what meditation is, and what the origin of Buddhism is. When he was wiping the small tea table, people’s headaches and backaches were healed. When he was sweeping his backyard, the crippled could walk again. This reminds me of what is described in kung-fu novels; people kill without lifting a finger. You may not have seen him healing people, but he did it compassionately with every action.
Once in a while, my master would meditate for a whole month; when we woke him up, when he first talked to us, everyone felt shocked and muddled, and felt the ground shaking. The tree beside us, its branches began to quiver, although it was a huge tree which could only be moved by typhoons. When he sang, the stone fish in our backyard would shed tears. Why? He had become one with the world. Achieving enlightenment is not about escaping from the world, but becoming one with the world.
Some people say, “Buddhadharma exists because of all sentient beings’ sufferings; its purpose is to eliminate the sufferings and benefit all sentient beings.” What I am telling you right now is the best way to be free from suffering. Why do people live in this world but not love it? Why don’t you care for or love family members around you? You don’t love people you should love; you say, “I hate you, I despise you.” Even though she looks pretty, you tell her she is ugly.
Why are we like this? Because we don’t have enough love in our hearts. Or even if we have enough love, due to ignorance, we end up expressing the opposite; this causes us to steer further away from the world. From being together to being apart. That explains why we are against the world.
We should learn to love the world. When you see the first ray of sunlight, say, “I am the sunlight, and the sunlight is me.” “I am warmth, and warmth is me.” When you drink, say, “I am the water, and the water is me.” That is how close we can be with Nature. People who love each other want to be together. Mine becomes yours; I give you all the money I earn and all my best things. Any delicious food, fun stuff and beautiful scenes, I would want to share it with you, right? That is true love.
But the realm my master reached is much higher; he loved the world, and wanted to become one with it. Whether today’s wind is cold or hot, you say, “I am the wind, and the wind is me.” “I am the mountain, and the mountain is me.” When you step on the grass, you would watch your step so as to not hurt the grass as much. Even for the bowl you use to eat, you think, “I am the bowl, and the bowl is me.” When you sleep, your blanket keeps you warm, right? If becoming a blanket sounds lame, then at least appreciate it for keeping you warm. When you adopt this mindset and then wrap yourself in your blanket, you will be very warm and happy.
As a living being, we don’t know what goes through inanimate objects’ minds. I am the bowl, the bowl is me. I am the blanket, the blanket is me. Do they really want to become one with us? They don’t think. Maybe there is a spirit residing in them. There is an intuition. What are their ways of expressing love? They have their own ways of loving and protecting you. This love is compassion. If you can love the world and its creations, you are compassionate.
Compassion will be repaid by the world with compassion.
When you show the world that you love all of its creations, as in “You are me, and I am you”, what benefits can you get? The benefits will surprise you. To start small, let’s talk about making money. Today you want to sell something and earn money, but you don’t want to rip people off, right? So you will make quality products. You will provide good services to your customers. This is how you win your customers’ hearts. Be good to them; that is how they become your long-term and even lifetime customers. When you are good to one person, that person is not yet your customer; at most he is your friend. But when you are kind to all your customers, you will get a lot of money.
Fake products will not get you far. Some companies sell fake dairy products, such as milk, powdered milk, yogurt drinks, even drinks that were meant for infants. You may be safe for a short time because someone protects you; sooner or later people will expose you. Fake is still fake, no matter how you mask it. What if someone’s child become mentally ill or disabled after eating your product? People would be after your life.
So try to understand the mindset of loving the world and its creations. If I were to produce milk powder and nutritious drinks for infants, I would think of my children as possible consumers. I would run extensive tests and perfect my products before selling to consumers. You would feel calm, not guilty. When you sell your products to others, you are happy that you can help them. If you sold fake stuff, you would be happy when counting cash, but you would always feel guilty and tense, fearful of being exposed. You are worried about your safety right?
After having earned lots of money, many people worry about being audited by the government. Their illegal behaviors would be found out through audits. These people are not honest. They won’t end up well. I am not cursing anyone. But if you cheat your customers, your business won’t last long. The act of cheating is not auspicious, it is risky. After listening to me, you should understand: You don’t need to do your business with worries and panic. Ensure your products’ quality and nothing should worry you.
What if you are in politics? Then that is huge. You can serve as a member of the neighborhood committee or as a government officer who provides service for your region. All you would think about is how to provide better service and fight for people’s benefits. If you serve people sincerely, they can feel it and will love you. With a higher mental state, you could be a mayor or even a president. It is possible. Because people trust that you are a good person who loves people, they will vote for you.
If you are a teacher, think of your students as your own children. You don’t beat your kids, you love them. You wouldn’t beat them to death for not completing homework. Love your students as you love your children. When you are teaching children, you need to have compassionate love for them.
If you love the world and people, and have compassion, people will love you back. On the contrary, if you harm, deceive or torture them, you end up harming yourself. So to become one with the world, you need to love the world first. Many generations have passed away; we will die too, but the world will remain. Thus, being one with the world actually makes us eternal. From the cosmic view, only compassion can liberate you from being reborn into the 6 realms or being banished to hell. That is how you become one with the world, being blessed with an eternal life.
Regardless of occupation, if you understand my teachings and become one with the world, you will succeed in whatever you do. The purpose of this teaching is for you to see through birth, age, sickness and death, and realize the meaning of life. If you happened to listen to these 2 days of teachings, you will be easing up a lot and have fewer worries in your mind. Why? Because death no longer intimidates you. You are undisturbed. Only then can you access your wisdom. The intention of becoming one with the world will make you an all-loving, compassionate person. This will benefit you in terms of your overall existence and the meaning of life. This will be good for you in terms of fate transformation.
We are all in a human body; our appearance is similar. When I studied human fate, I noticed some key points that determine fate. I can’t say for everyone, but it is a general rule for most. Most people I meet are ordinary folks. Only a few held high official positions or were in good financial shape. What was different about them was not the amount of money they had. Great achievers have a mindset unlike that of ordinary folks.
A person who earns less tends to focus on the petty things at home. What do they argue about? Say, in a married couple, the husband gets annoyed that the wife sends $100 to her mother monthly without thinking about his mom. So they fight about this. Who should feed their dog? Their children got bad grades. “It is your fault!” “You didn’t raise our children properly.” “You don’t care about our kids.” “Look at how much better other parents are.” They run each other down. They argue about trivial things in their family. They get overly upset about their kids’ exam scores. It is quite shallow. They forget that each person has their own fate.
On the other hand, people who achieve greatness usually don’t bluff. It is easy to tell when someone is bluffing. Rather, they naturally exude the depth and farsightedness of their perspective. An achiever deals with things differently and gets better results; they usually think in a macro way. What does that mean? They think about life from a wider and deeper perspective. This is how the Chinese differentiate a great mind from a petty mind. The difference between a nobleman and a nobody is the different thinking between great achievers and ordinary folks. Commoners usually don’t think too far into the future; they are concerned with things that will happen soon. Wise people usually think with farsightedness.
When you set your goals differently, what you achieve will also be different. We haven’t mentioned compassion yet. Here is an example. If a young man in North America says he wants to make one million USD in the next few years through hard work, what will happen to him after he has succeeded? Maybe when he has realized his goal, or even when he is close to his goal, he will have already found his next goal: It is 5 million. If another person wanted to be the president and didn’t get elected, he might end up as the head of some organization, or as a premier or mayor. Overseas there are also councilors and government officials. He may not become a president, but some sort of a political leader.
The key lies in their mental state. The bigger a person’s goal, the more farsighted they are, and the bigger the difference in how they think. When your goal is to earn one or 5 million USD, your energy is only focused on making more money; that is it. So all your actions and thinking, both at work and at home, would be related to the one million USD. Even when you reach 5 million, it is just a matter of changing numbers. From one to 5, it is still the same feeling. When money is all you are after, your mental state is not that high. You are just after money. Will you love the world? Unlikely. I am sure you will love your customers. After they pay you, you don’t love them anymore.
If a person vowed to be a president, they would first learn how to be one. When someone learns how to care for his country and his people, even if they don’t become a president, they will become an outstanding figure who loves the people. His mental state is completely different. When you vow to love the world, you either end up with a healthy body and mind or are destined to become a world leader to benefit your people. How great your achievements are depends on how farsighted you are. The love for the world comes when you have enough compassion to become one with the world.
How good or bad our fate is depends on our mental state. How great or small our achievement depends on our farsightedness.
I teach Buddhism for fate transformation. Buddhism is about ending suffering and attaining happiness. Our wisdom is obstructed due to various factors, such as lack of education or poor family situations, so we seem not to possess Buddhist wisdom. Today we have the chance to study Buddhist wisdom and seek to dive deeper into the subject. It would help you transform your fate if you understood my teaching. Using Buddhist wisdom, transform and improve your fate.
Some people believe in fortunetelling; they have their reasons. Fortunetellers can tell your merits and the karma in your fate by just reading your birthtime, palm and face. Sakyamuni Buddha didn’t believe that fate is unchangeable. He believed that fate is set by previous causes and effects. But Sakyamuni Buddha also believed people can change their fate. One’s fate is changeable. How? It lies in changing your mind and perspective on the world. What I am saying now might bring about some transformation; doing good deeds can improve one’s fate.
Let’s listen to a story about the great Dwight Eisenhower.
(He was once president of the United States. Before he became the president, during World War II, he was the supreme commander of the Allied Forces. One day, he was returning to France for a meeting. It was a snowy day. Eisenhower was going to his meeting via a preplanned route. He didn’t know that the Nazi Intelligence Bureau was paying close attention. They had gotten hold of his route and knew when he would be there. Snipers were ready to assassinate him on the road. He didn’t know about this; he continued along his charted route.
He approached a village. The snow was getting heavier, and it was extremely cold. Through the car window, he saw a car stopped on the roadside. He asked his driver to check what had happened. An old couple were inside the car. He got out of his car and asked the couple what had happened. The couple said they couldn’t start their car due to the cold weather. There was no other village nearby, so they could only wait for a miracle. Eisenhower said that this was not a good idea and offered to drive them back home. The couple were both old; staying in the cold could be life-threatening. He ordered his subordinates to take them home.
His subordinates reminded him of his meeting and that their work could be delayed due to the weather. Eisenhower insisted on rerouting to take the old couple home. So, they took another route to bring the old couple home. Then they continued driving to their meeting from the couple’s home. He had no idea about the ambush at all. The Nazis were baffled. They believed their information was correct. But their snipers didn’t see Eisenhower after waiting for hours. They didn’t know that Eisenhower’s kindness led him to reroute and helped him escape death.
So, Eisenhower saved not only the old couple but also himself. He was able to keep his life and led the Allied Forces to win the war. He avoided the ambush and later brought peace to the world. All the results were due to his kindness in helping out the old couple.)
He was the supreme commander of the Allied Forces. His position was very important. If he had died during that ambush, it could be a different world for us now. Never underestimate a small kind thought or deed. You never know how kindness could change your life. All lights in a grand hall, or all the streetlights on a 10-km street, can be lit up by just a small switch. Today I flip the switch, and the entire 10-km street is lit. Yes, a small cause can bring big effects. Don’t refuse to do a good deed because It is small; stay away from evil deeds no matter how small they are. Eisenhower’s kindness saved not only his life, but also the lives of many in the world. This is a great story to tell. I have told this story several times. This is how kindness transformed the fate of the world.
Kindness transforms our fate.
To summarize: Kindness, good deeds and compassion are the most important factors in transforming our fate. The difference between a great man and an average one lies in the mental state. Kindness makes a great man, while pettiness makes an ordinary one.
In terms of health condition, a petty person’s health is probably not that good. If you are easily agitated, you will hurt both others and yourself; it is a double-edged sword. When you show others love, both you and others are blessed with happiness, joy and help. So we attain happiness. When you show kindness, you will be repaid with kindness. You might get cheated; that is not a reason to stop being kind. When you practice kindness, good things will come.
From what I can see, the world is fair. Our world is blessed with a self-healing and self-balancing mechanism. All Nature’s creations can be used to recover our health. Everything Nature creates can be used to improve humans’ and animals’ health in every aspect. Buddha discovered these principles and told us. Let’s take our opportunity to learn as much as we can. Understanding these principles will surely help us.
If you have been listening for the past 3 days, your fate transformation has probably begun. Some people’s fates transform quicker, some slower. That is OK. Just try to understand as much as you can. Don’t try to understand all at once; understanding a little is better than nothing at all.
Compassion and Universal love are the keys to fate transformation.
