16th Century, Ming Dynasty

Earth Store Bodhisattva’s endurance is as strong and immovable as the earth and his wisdom is as profound as a treasure store, hence the Bodhisattva is named Earth Store. According to Buddhist sutras, in his past lives, Earth Store Bodhisattva repeatedly saved his mother from hell. Eons ago, this bodhisattva repeatedly made vows to save all suffering sentient beings. He vowed not to attain enlightenment until all sentient beings are liberated, and not to achieve Buddhahood until all hells are emptied.

In this thangka, Earth Store Bodhisattva sits on a pedestal with ease and grandeur. The headdress naturally falls on his shoulders. His right hand holds a Cintamani jewel, which represents Earth Store Bodhisattva’s pure wisdom. He wears a dharma robe with brown and royal-green borders. The robe is adorned with various exquisite patterns. The lines of this thangka are smooth and delicate, and the depiction is detailed and exquisite.

Because of the immense merits from Earth Store Bodhisattva’s great filial piety and great vow, sincere worshipers will receive his powerful blessings. Their home will be harmonious and unified, and their family members will be peaceful and auspicious. The worshiper’s ancestors and their parents of seven lifetimes will be blessed by this bodhisattva. They will no longer fall into the three evil paths and will instead be reincarnated in the Pure Lands. The worshiper will receive the blessings of health, merits and longevity, be freed from all calamity and illness, and enjoy safe travels; they will also be blessed with plenty of food and clothing, help in times of trouble, and the fulfillment of their cherished wishes.
