When we are tense or nervous, our muscles feel tight, right? Try recalling a time when you were extremely scared or nervous, such as when you were about to hit a car and had to slam on the brakes. This mentality of fear creates strength that allows you to respond well. But it will also make the brain nerves and muscles extremely tense.

Once this happens, there may be a blockage in a particular channel in your body. The back of your neck is supposed to be at ease. Due to muscle tightness caused by overexertion, or exposure to a cold draft, blockages occur, making you feel pain or numbness. In the worst case, you can’t move your neck, and even your fingertips and tongue will feel numb. This is scary. These symptoms could result from nerve blockages in the brain.

Our energy flow is blocked when we get nervous. When the inner brain is damaged, will it hurt our kidneys too? Yes. Regardless of your gender, you are unable to control your bladder when you feel extreme fear. Worst case, incontinence happens. Fear could trigger a loss of vital energy. This can cause you to suffer brain damage. Besides tension, negative feelings like hatred, sadness, vengeance, and chronic stress can cause illnesses.

So when you are practicing Energy Bagua for health and longevity, the first important thing to learn is to relax yourself. Should we relax our body or our mind first? For beginners, I would ask you to relax your shoulders and hips first. Mind relaxation is a bit too deep for beginners. I am sure they are new to this topic when they first arrive. You would feel bored if I bombarded you with lots of spiritual stuff in your first lesson.

Beginners learn about movements first. We require you to relax your joints during these movements. However, to be truly relaxed is to relax your mind. That is relaxation at a more advanced level. When your mind is relaxed, your muscles and internal organs will follow. With the addition of wonderful music and a peaceful environment, we can relax ourselves.

Even though the music is soothing and inside the house is safe, if there are people shooting outside and a robbery is happening, you would feel nervous in the house when you heard the commotion. These signals harm your body. I have advocated maintaining a high-level of relaxation spiritually to relax both body and mind. When people are at a high spiritual level, they can see through rules and understand them. That is how you can stay calm when things happen.

For a child, going to school for the first time is nerve-racking. I believe all children will be stressed regardless of what they think of the school. They are all nervous. For a teenager who has finished middle school, when he is faced with his little brother’s stress about going to school for the first time, he would say things like, “Relax, it is OK, this school is actually really fun. These classmates will be your friends. They won’t hit you. They will all play with you and you will become good friends.”

He will say this because he has been there and gone through years of studying. That is why he tells you it is OK and not to be stressed. It is because he has gone through it. That is why he can be calm on the first day of school. When our mental state and age reach a certain level, say you are 50 years old, your views will be completely different from when you were 20. When you are 20, you are more reckless. You rely more on your senses to judge the world when you are 20.

People in their 50s have been through all the pain and love just to realize that it is all for nothing. “Why did I do that?” In the end, you have had a lot of experiences that help you form experience-based conclusions. When people reach their 50s, they think things through based on their life experience. When we reach a certain age and start reflecting on our life, this is the right time to start self-cultivation. You have lots of life experiences; you don’t just listen to elders; you reach conclusions based on your experience.

You have seen enough of rain and shine, ups and downs, etc. So when you encounter opportunism, cunning and greed, you won’t be influenced. You will treat these matters very calmly. So you don’t fail easily. You have a relaxed mind with which to face the world and educate your children.
